Christmas in the South Carolina Lowcountry
The Christmas season is quickly approaching in the South Carolina Lowcountry. As we prepare to roast the turkey and welcome the family for Thanksgiving, let’s look at the events that are coming in December. The list is long, so we’ll take it town-by-town.
Looking for a little Pirate’s Christmas Adventure? Come to Frampton Plantation House and spend the day living life like a pirate on December 7th. Visit with Pirate Santa and all his mates. Explore a pirate camp complete with kitchen, apothecary and surgeon tent. Play with the Charleston Few Pirates. Compete in the children’s pirate costume contest. Play games like scavenger hunts and toss the rat and skuttle hatch, visit Santa Clause and the Parris Island Marines, and drop off a toy at our Toys for Tots drop box. The Beaufort Festival of Trees will be celebrated at Tabby Place in downtown Beaufort with tree viewing December 3rd-5th. The Gala will take place December 5th. The event will be topped off with a Snow Day and the Gingerbread 5K Run/Walk.
Beaufort will be holding its Holiday Weekend December 6-8th, beginning with Night on the Town. Stores will be open late and festivities will be in full swing for fun holiday shopping. Come back Saturday night for the Lighted Boat Parade, followed by the Christmas Parade on Sunday.
Santa is coming back to The Beaufort Inn on December 6th for the 3rd Annual Visit with Santa during Night on the Town! Come get in the Christmas spirit by writing a letter to Santa, enjoying hot coco and cider, roasting marshmallows, and having a professional photo taken with Santa! This event is free and open to the public.
Save the date for this year’s Gullah Holiday Celebration! The annual Beaufort festival is set to take place the weekend of December 6th -8th. Tickets are already on sale for their performance A Gullah Kinfolk Christmas Wish…Freedom Coming. This fully staged musical production has become a holiday favorite with audience members traveling from both near and far to experience the spirit of the season. The performance depicts an historical account of December of 1860, the last Christmas before the Civil War. South Carolina has just seceded from the Union and War or Freedom is the talk by servant and master.
Aunt Pearlie Sue, nationally acclaimed storyteller, and her Gullah Kinfolk bring history alive on stage. The performance features soul-stirring, foot-stomping, singing and dancing, creating the excitement of the Yuletide season on a South Carolina Sea Island plantation.
Delight in a cast of local ballet dancers as they recreate the magic of
the Nutcracker, the world’s favorite holiday ballet. at Beaufort’s University of South Carolina Center for the Arts December 13-14.
The story of The Nutcracker was originally written by E.T.A. Hoffmann, however, the beautiful score which accompanies this world-famous ballet was created by Tchaikovsky and received its debut over 100 years ago in 1892.
The Parris Island Marine Band will perform their 2019 Holiday Concert at 3:30 p.m. on December 14th. The concert will be held at the Battery Creek High School Performing Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public.
The Beaufort Symphony Orchestra will present Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, featuring the Vocal Styling of Rebecca Flaherty on December 15th. Come out sing along to holiday favorites including
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! The Christmas Song and I’ll be home for Christmas.

Save the date for the Town of Port Royal’s Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade! Many residents in the town of Port Royal are proud owners of golf carts, and the Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade is a chance for them to showcase their carts decked out with festive decorations and compete in a competition for “Best in Show.” Don’t miss this one of a kind event! This year’s Port Royal Christmas Golf Cart Parade will take place on December 14th.
On Saturday, November 30th, gather with us in Wilson Village on the Village Green for the first-ever Lighting of our Village Tree. We will kick off the festivities with carolers, a holiday band, pictures with Santa, shopping on Boat House Row, and food trucks to feed the whole family. At 6:30 PM, the tree will be lit and the fun festivities will continue. The event is complimentary.
If you’re in Bluffton on December 5th Palmetto Bluff’s May River Chapel will be the site for an intimate evening of live music with the Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band. A cash bar will be available.
The Town of Bluffton will hold their Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 6th. The Annual Bluffton Tree-Lighting Ceremony will take place in Bluffton’s Historic District.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the Michael C. Riley Elementary school chorus, and Town leaders will light the Bluffton Christmas Tree.
Finally, cookies and refreshments will be served under the Pavilion where Santa and Mrs. Claus will make a pre-Christmas visit.
The following day you can enjoy the Annual Town of Bluffton Christmas Parade on the 7th. The parade is happening rain or shine so please be prepared for the elements.
Bluffton Christmas Festival will be held on December 20th. Celebrate the Christmas season at Cornerstone Church Bluffton! Lots of great activities, as well as delicious dining options, will provide the whole family the Holliest, Jolliest evening of all at the Bluffton Christmas Festival! Along with a great meal, you can enjoy sledding in the snow, mechanical reindeer bull ride, Christmas train, climbing wall, Christmas cookie decorating and MUCH MORE!
Live performances from gifted locals, talented youth, and our very own stars! Plus a performance from the cast of Kiss Me Kate!
Santa, Mrs. Claus and Rudolph kick off the holiday season on the Arts Center grounds for the Official Community Tree Lighting Ceremony! Activities for children include face painting, holiday crafts and photo opportunities with Santa. Hot chocolate, coffee, hot dogs, bowls of chili, and other treats will keep you nice and toasty! Tree raffles, door prizes, Holly Day Art Market, Pup Parade & Pageant and more! In the spirit of giving, guests are encouraged to bring non-perishable foods or unwrapped toys to benefit Deep Well.
Historic Holidays on Hilton Head Island will be celebrated December 6-9th. This is a weekend of Sea Island traditional happenings. The events will feature Lowcountry foods, historic church experiences, holiday market, trolley and bike tours, historic regiment encampment, ancestry research, and community tree lighting.
The Hilton Head Choral Society presents The Sounds of Christmas on December 13th. This performance celebrates the joy, the magic, the essence of the season. A musical banquet awaits you with a menu full of traditional tunes and carols from the Old Country and the New World. Join the full chorus and orchestra for this festive Island favorite. Filled to the brim with the joy and effervescence of the season. Something for the child in us all.
Edisto Community Chorus Christmas Concert will be presented on December 7th and 8th at the Edisto Beach Baptist Church.
Bay Creek Marina will host the Edisto Holiday Market and Mingle on December 13th. This annual event will feature a
Holiday Arts & Crafts Show, live music & Christmas Tree Lighting.
Edisto Beach’s 28th Annual Parade will be held on December 14th Rain or Shine! This year’s theme is “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”. Decorate a boat, truck, golf cart, tractor… use your imagination and become part of our island’s history! The more music and lights the better!
Walterboro will be the location for Charleston Jazz Orchestra’s performance of Holiday Swing December 1st at the Colleton Civic Center. Maestro Robert Lewis and his 18-piece band will swing you into the holiday spirit with the big band arrangements of holiday favorites. Add a little jazz to your holiday cheer with this popular jazz tradition.
The Colleton Museum will host Screenings of Christmas Classics December 2-5th. Jack Frost, Scrooge, Babes in Toyland, and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians will be shown on the lawn. These movies will be shown outside on the Colleton Museum grounds. Please bring snacks, chairs, and blankets. In case of inclement weather, the movies will be shown inside.
The town’s first Thursday event will be held on the 5th, along with a Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade. Participants may bring an ornament to place on the tree in memory or honor of a loved one.
The Colleton Museum and Farmers Market will be the location for a fun-filled Holiday Festival. This free event will feature live Christmas music, a holiday market, Santa Claus, kid’s crafts and cookie decorating.

The Cottageville Christmas Parade will start at Town Hall on December 14th and ring in the season for this cute, Colleton County town.
Ridgeland’s Festival of Music and Lights begins December 5th and continues through the 23rd. This highly anticipated event is held in the Blue Heron Nature Trail. Lighted Christmas decorations are elaborately placed throughout the trail and reflected on the lake. Local musical groups perform nightly. The opening ceremonies take place with much fanfare after the Christmas Parade.
Santa Clause is coming to the town of Ridgeland and the Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage! Come have Breakfast with Santa. Families can enjoy story time with Ol’ Saint Nick and a hot breakfast, too. Participants will be able to pose for pictures with Santa and make a craft. This event is sure to get you in the holiday spirit.
Hardeeville will be holding their Annual Christmas Tree Lighting on December 2nd at City Hall. Come light the Christmas Tree with the town and sing Christmas carols to kick of the Christmas Holiday. The Town Christmas parade will be held on December 14th at 10 a.m.
The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Parade will start the holiday season in Hampton on December 5th. The tree lighting will take place at city hall. The parade will follow. The parade will begin on Hampton Street and continue onto E. Washington Street. After the parade, head over to Palmetto Theater for the annual Hampton County Choral Society Christmas Concert.
Hampton will celebrate its annual Children’s Hometown Christmas Celebration on December 11th with activities for children including crafts & games. Come enjoy holiday snow from Frosty and visit with Santa. He will be taking notes on what boys and girls want for Christmas! Santa will also be available for pictures. Santa can’t wait to see you!
