Beaufort ~The Battle of Fort Sullivan & Carolina Day History
On June 28, 1776 eleven British ships entered Charleston Harbor and began firing on a small, incomplete fort made out of Palmetto trees and sand on Sullivan’s Island. Even though the fort took a pounding it did not fall.
