Winter Shorebirds on Harbor Island
Join SCDNR staff for a winter shorebird outing on Harbor Island, designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the Audubon Society.
Following a classroom discussion on local species and the importance of habitat for wintering shorebirds, the group will take a two-mile beach walk on the sandbar adjacent to Harbor Island to view wintering shorebirds.
Please be prepared for a long walk down a boardwalk and a two-mile hike across the sandy beach. We suggest bringing binoculars (spotting scope if you have one) and plenty of water. Please dress appropriately for time outdoors and beach walk.
Weather decisions will be made the day before the event and participants will be notified ASAP.
This event is part of a series of programs offered by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the ACE Basin NERR to inspire stewardship and appreciation of our state’s coastal wildlife and landscapes.
Registration is required and slots are filled on a first come, first served basis — but there is a wait list if spaces become available.
