Africans arrived in the low country with the Spanish in 1526 and became the majority of the low country population for more than 2 centuries. Imported Africans and their descendants were critical to the development of the low country society and economy. They also played a critical role in the Revolutionary War. This class will be a discussion of African life and activity from the time of arrival until the formation of the new nation.
