“No-see-ums”, the Most Irritating Residents of the Lowcountry

The Coastal Discovery Museum will host Dr. John D. Edman for “No-see-ums”, the Most Irritating Residents of the Lowcountry on December 5 at 3 pm.  No-see-ums, often referred to as sand flies or biting midges, are a unique part of the ecology of the lowcountry.  This seasonal biting nuisance is associated with coastal tidal marshes and has spoiled many an outdoor event, especially during twilight periods.  This presentation will explain the life history of these and closely related blood-feeding flies found in the lowcountry; when and where they are most active and what people can do to protect themselves.

Dr. Edman retired to Sun City Hilton Head after a 40 year academic career of teaching, researching and administration.  His broad interests in the behavior and ecology of blood-feeding arthropods and the infectious diseases they transmit, resulted in nearly 200 research publications, reviews, book chapters and a test for graduate and advance undergraduate students entitled: Medical Entomology – A Textbook on Public Health and Veterinary Problems Caused by Arthropods (co-authored with Eldridge).

The program is $7.00 per person (ages 12 and older only) and reservations are required by calling 843-689-6767 ext 223.
