Known as the John Wayne of his time, Menendez was an advisor to King Phillip II of Spain and was the founder of the first lasting European settlement in North America at Santa Elena, where he served as Governor of Spanish La Florida.
The Lowcountry & Resort Islands Region of South Carolina includes the four, southern-most counties in the state, Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, and Colleton, which are bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the Savannah River and the state of Georgia.
