Ridgeland ~ Honoring the Work of Black Southerners

Dr. Stephanie Y. Mitchem’s lecture honors the work of black southerners from Jim Crow-era to today. This talk connects to the work seen in “Sharing the Chores: Works on Paper by Jonathan Green,” currently on view at the Morris Center.
Discussions of the work of black folk often miss the ingenuity and determination achieved as well as its absolute necessity for the construction of the United States. Particularly, the work of black folks in South Carolina should be honored for the difficulties faced with creativity, faith, and honor. This talk will focus on the historical work of black Americans, considering how some aspects continue to the present day.
Dr. Stephanie Y. Mitchem, professor of religious studies at the University of South Carolina, teaches contemporary theology and women’s studies, emphasizing the experiences and perspectives of black women. Her current research focuses on the intersections of social class, gender constructions, racism, and religions, ideas which Cox also examines through her art.
