Ridgeland ~ Story of Santa Elena

Event Details

Join us for a talk with Bill Davies that examines what happened between to “discovery” of America by Columbus in 1492 and the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown in 1607. Santa Elena was the first capital of a European colony in the present day footprint of the United States, but its history is not taught in schools – and it is right down the road. Today the site of Santa Elena is one of the most pristine archaeological research opportunities in America. All South Carolinians, indeed all citizens of the United States, need to know about that hundred years as it is a part of our history which shaped us into the country we are today. Admission is free.
