Hardeeville
The City of Hardeeville sits just off Interstate 95. In the downtown area you can find Argent Engine #5. It is a testimony to the days when the Argent Lumber Company was an integral part of the area’s economy. Mill Pond Landing is the host of several fishing tournaments and the annual Hardeeville Native American Pow Wow. If you’re looking for a nature hike in Hardeeville, look no farther than Sgt Jasper Park. Located just outside of town, this is a great place to get off the interstate and stretch your legs in the heart of the Lowcountry.
A little way from the landing, a cross shaped monument stands where the settlement of Purrysburg once was. Land was given to Swiss colonizer Jean Pierre Purry in 1731 by the King of England but the establishment failed. Located just south of Hardeeville is the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset every day. You can observe and photograph wildlife, fish, or during the season, hunt white-tailed deer.
The Hardeeville Chamber hosts a fun filled SC/GA Border Cook Off BBQ competition each spring.
Ridgeland
The Town of Ridgeland is also just off Interstate 95 and accessible from exits 21 and 22. The Blue Heron Nature Trail is a terrific place to stop to give everyone in the family, even your four legged members, a chance to stretch out their legs and get a breath of fresh air. There are many Historic Churches in Ridgeland and the surrounding villages. Ridgeland is also the home of the Blue Heron Nature Trail, Morris Center and Harold Turpin Park.
The town celebrates its connection with the Gopher Tortoise each year in October at the Gopher Hill Festival. In February, the Jasper County Jamboree draws sportsmen and women from all across the nation to compete in this American Kennel Club event.
Both the City of Hardeeville and the Town of Ridgeland offer several choices for accommodations and dining experiences. They are great examples of typical small towns in the South Carolina Lowcountry. You can learn more about these wonderful communities at the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce.
