This is a 100 minute presentation reflecting the awkward and imperfect discovery of the “New World” through an introspection of selected rare maps and charts, largely through the lens of Spanish Santa Elena. The presentation contrasts the world as scholars knew it to be before Columbus sailed in 1492, against the world as Europeans knew it to be as the English prepared to settle Jamestown in 1607. The presentation includes Columbus’ last understanding of his “Indies” discoveries before his death in 1506, the 1507 map from which our continent got the name “America”, and describes how the South and East Coast of the current United States transitioned from an unimagined void to the well-defined coast line we recognize today.
