On land purchased in 1776 by Irish immigrant and privateer, Captain John Stoney, the only fully tabby mansion ever built on Hilton Head was erected beginning in 1793. Stoney became a sea island cotton planter after the war and in the War of 1812, commanded two privateering vessels out of his land on Broad Creek. After the War he lived a life fishing and hunting while his sons ran the cotton factorage business he had founded. In receivership due to his sons’ flamboyant lifestyle, the land and house were sold to William Baynard by the Bank of Charleston in 1845 by the Bank of Charleston for $10,000.
