Cutting Edge Lowcountry Oyster Reef Research with environmental DNA

The Coastal Discovery Museum will host Professor Mercer Brugler on January 12 at 2 pm. as
part of our Discovery Lecture series. You will hear form University of South Carolina Professor
Brugler about the relevance and importance of our local oyster reefs. Eastern Oyster create a
complex 3D habitat for a diversity of marine organisms. During low tide, exposed oyster reefs
provide food for birds and small mammals, and when inundated, oysters obtain nutrition by
filtering the water, which serves to improve water clarity and quality.
Dr. Brugler is an Associate Professor of Marine Biology at the USC-Beaufort. The cost of the
program is $7, and reservations may be made by calling 843-689-6767 ext. 223. The museum
is located at 70 Honey Horn Drive on Hilton Head Island.
