Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park has confirmed an expansive experience for the in person return to their annual Juneteenth Celebration. The art, food and music festival has expanded to a three-day lineup featuring Joe McGill and The Slave Dwelling Project, the premier of the film Juneteenth: Lift Every Voice and Sing, interactive experiences that are significant to the era of Mitchelville in the Reconstruction Era, plus a live performances by the Grammy nominated The HamilTones and Marlena Smalls and the Hallelujah Singers. On Thursday, June 17th the Slave Dwelling Project Comes to Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. Founder Joe McGill, a Civil War re-enactor and descendent of the enslaved, has slept at over 90 sites in 18 states exploring extant slave dwellings. Limited space is available for in-person attendance, but the evening will be streamed on Facebook at @exploremitchelville as he explores the life and living habits of the people of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park.
On Friday, June 18th A film documenting the national exploration of the deep-rooted anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” through the eyes of historic museums and anthropologists. Contributions to the film include America’s Black Holocaust Museum – Milwaukee, Amistad Research Center of Tulane University, August Wilson African American Cultural Center – Pittsburg , California African American Museum -Los Angeles, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History – Detroit, Harvey Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture – Charlotte, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park- Hilton Head Island, National Civil Rights Museum – Memphis, Northwest African American Museum -Seattle, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center – Cincinnati, and the National Civil Rights Museum – Memphis, TN. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, but only limited seating is available, so chairs are encouraged. Admission for the film is free.
On Saturday, June 19th the annual in park celebration will highlight the food and music customs of the people of Mitchelville and special performances by Marlena Smalls and the Hallelujah Singers, historical re-enactment from a local favorite Cora Miller and a robust kid-zone including video games, inflatable bounce houses, and make-and-take craft stations. The featured entertainment will be The HamilTones, they have appeared on The Steve Harvey Show, The Apollo, performed at Carnegie Hall, Jimmy Kimmel, The Breakfast Club and Good Morning America. Chairs are encouraged, but no coolers will be allowed in the park. Tickets are $20 for General Admission, $5 for children 6 -12 and free for children 5 and under.
