The Toxic Avenger Musical is a laugh-out-loud, rock-and-roll comedy packed with outrageous characters, killer songs, and gloriously over-the-top chaos. Based on Lloyd Kaufman’s 1984 cult classic film from Troma Entertainment, this musical follows Melvin Ferd III, a mild-mannered nerd from Tromaville, New Jersey, who is thrown into a vat of toxic waste and transformed into an unlikely mutant superhero. Now known as Toxie, he sets out to fight corruption, save the environment, win the heart of a blind librarian, and prove that heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and shades of green.
With book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics by David Bryan of Bon Jovi, The Toxic Avenger blends comic-book absurdity, campy romance, environmental satire, and a high-energy rock score into one wildly funny night at the theatre. The musical premiered in New Jersey in 2008 before opening Off-Broadway in 2009, where it went on to win the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Off-Broadway Musical.
