SHEPHERD OF THE SABLE MULTITUDE: GENERAL RUFUS SAXTON
Instructor: Rich Thomas
Examines the life and career of General Rufus Saxton, a champion of Lincoln’s original plan for Reconstruction. He was stationed on Hilton Head Island during much of the Civil War and was eventually appointed Military Governor of the Department of the South and Inspector of Settlements and Plantations under General Sherman’s special order creating the reservation for resettlement of Freedmen. Saxton’s determined struggle to resist President Johnson’s order to return confiscated land to its former owners allowed the blacks on Edisto and the other sea islands, including Hilton Head Island, to retain the lands they had purchased from the government following Emancipation.
