Walterboro Army Air Field and the nearby town of Walterboro, SC became a pivotal battleground of the early Civil Rights Movement when the air field became the training site for the Tuskegee Airmen late in World War II. Black pilots and servicemen stationed at the air field challenged segregated facilities at the base, discriminatory treatment by base officials and the engrained social conventions of the Jim Crow South throughout 1944 & 1945. Meanwhile the Black Associated Press used conditions at the base as a rallying cry for ending unequal and discriminatory practices throughout the armed services.
