Tragic Deaths & Modest Burials Tour – Colleton Museum & Farmers Market

Tragic Deaths & Modest Burials tells the stories of the residents of the Live Oak Cemetery.  Cyrus A. Singleton Jr. was killed by a train the day before he left for college more than 100 years ago. Emma Rivers was crushed by a chimney during the Cyclone of 1879. Both were buried in Live Oak Cemetery after their deaths. Discover the stories behind these tragic deaths and others during a tour of the two sections of Walterboro’s historic Live Oak Cemetery. The tour will also discuss burial practices of more than a century ago as well as the language of tombstones.

The tour is appropriate for Adults and Kids, age 12+.
Closed-toed shoes and long pants recommended as some areas of the cemetery might have long grass or storm debris. Hats and water might also be welcome. The tour will last just over an hour.There are two tour times,1-2 p.m. & 3-4 p.m.  Please call 843-549-2303 to register.
