Family Fun Day at Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn

The Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island has announced a “Family Fun Day” on August 10 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at their location at Honey Horn.  This event will give the public yet another opportunity to see what the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn has to offer.
On your own you will be able to see the Museum’s boardwalk exhibits, learn about our salt marsh, explore the Replica Shell Ring and see what sort of shells, animal bones, and more are hidden in the replica Shell Ring.  You will have the opportunity to visit the horse barn and pasture to see our marsh tacky “Comet” and his companion horse “Hawk”.  A visit to the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Habitat will let you see the life cycle of various butterflies we have here on Hilton Head Island.  You will also see the new butterfly sculpture that has been installed.
Also scheduled to appear is Jevon Daly at 10:15 and 11:30.  Jevon is a local favorite with the young and old alike!!!
New to the day this year is the Children’s Book Festival with the Pat Conroy Literary Center.  Authors will be on site with their books for sale.  Also, a new fun activity is the Tiny Art Workshop.  Sponsored in part by the Town of Hilton Head Island Office of Cultural Affairs, you will be making original artwork to share in the Town’s Tiny Art Galleries (or to take home).
Visitors will also have the opportunity to pull up the crab trap, observe basket making and participate in indigo tie dyeing as you learn about its importance of this cash crop from year’s past.  Bird watching with the HHI Audubon Society will be available on the boardwalk.  The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina will have a nature inspired craft “Warhol Inspired Shoreline and Sea Prints”, Outside Foundation, Morris Center, LC Master Naturalists and local historical organizations all will be on site as well.   The South Carolina Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology – Maritime Research Division will bring their boat that they use for underwater archaeology surveys.  They will be doing some projects this summer/fall around the area.
The Temporary Exhibit Gallery will have “Conservation in the Classroom” on display, featuring many of our local school students.  You can visit the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn and see what is available on this 68-acre parcel of land.  For further information, please call 843-689-6767 ext 224.
There is no charge for admission on this special Museum Day and reservations are not required.
